Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, For I wait for You.
Psalm 25:21
Boredom is difficult.
For evildoers shall be cut off; But those who wait on the LORD, They shall inherit the earth. Psalms 37:9
Waiting takes courage. It’s a different sort of courage. Most of us don’t have what it takes. We get bored while waiting. Like a 3 year old, we do something stupid in our boredom while forgetting the promise that we just got that if we wait, we inherit the earth. Given the general nature of what inheriting the earth actually means, we question and again, act like a child. Courage to do what we are told dissipates. And we find ourself guilty of not waiting. If we are bad enough at waiting, maybe we become the evildoer that is cut-off. Being cut-off seems rather painful.
Instead, we are to let integrity and uprightness preserve us. It takes a lot of strength to make that happen. We think of strength and courage as things that occur when we have our chests inflated and our muscles tense. In boredom we typically don’t find such moments.
Boredom’s can find us curled up in our insecurities. Our insecurities do not bring to mind moments of strength and courage. In those moments we need a reminder of the FACT that we are sons of a Living God! A child of God is a warrior. Even warriors get bored.
I heard a story recently of a Navy SEAL who was challenged to a fight. He tells his wannabe opponent that he is happy to join him in the parking lot for the battle. But his friends will be joining him. The opponent questions the fairness of a 4 on 1 fight. The SEAL responds that it’s not about the fight. It’s about the win and his friends are there to ensure he wins.
In our boredom, we need our friends to remind us of the purpose. It’s not about the fight, it’s about the win.
Who do you know that is suffering? Has boredom set in? Remind your buddy of who he is and the point out the fact that strength and courage comes from the dudes around him - you!
